James CollinsStories Beneath the Story

A standalone visual reflection

The Empty Chair

When Love Remains After the Vessel Is Gone

The Empty Chair is a reflection on grief from the survivor’s perspective. It asks what happens when the vessel is gone, the chair is empty, and love must learn how to continue in a new form.

The chair may be empty, but the story is not.

The Empty Chair reminds us that grief is not the absence of faith. It is love learning how to live after physical access is gone. The chair may be empty, but the story is not.

The Empty Chair.
When Love Remains After the Vessel Is Gone.

Death does not only happen to the one who leaves.
It also happens to the ones who remain.

The vessel expires.
The breath leaves.
The body becomes still.

And then the room changes.

The chair is empty.
The voice is gone.
The table has one less place.

This is grief.

Not weakness.
Not failure.
Not the absence of faith.

Grief is love meeting absence.

It is love reaching for what it can no longer touch.
Listening for what it can no longer hear.
Carrying what cannot be held the same way anymore.

But love does not disappear because the body is gone.

A life leaves traces.

Words still echo.
Habits still remain.
Stories still guide.
Lessons still speak.
Fruit still grows.

The survivor is left with the holy work of learning how love continues in a new form.

Hope should not rush the tears.

Faith should not pretend the chair is not empty.

Even Jesus wept.

So the survivor may weep too.

Someone was here.
Someone mattered.
Someone changed the room.

The chair may be empty, but the story is not.

The breath has left the vessel, but the life that was lived still bears fruit.

And the one who remains must learn the tender work of continuing —

not by leaving love behind,

but by carrying it differently.
